Raptor: purpose-built, not just badged

Raptor hardware separates it from Tremor in kind, not just degree. The 12-inch minimum ground clearance, available 37-inch all-terrain tires, and Fox Shox Live Valve technology (adjusting damping in real time based on terrain) are built for sustained high-speed off-road driving, not occasional trail use. A Baja terrain management drive mode, standard head-up display, and standard 360-degree camera round out a truck that is as much a performance vehicle as a pickup. The 450-hp High Output 3.5L EcoBoost is unique to Raptor — it is not available on any other F-150 trim.

Raptor R: the 720-horsepower outlier

Raptor R swaps the EcoBoost for a supercharged 5.2L V8 making 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft — more than double the output of a base F-150 XL. It is rated at 12 mpg combined and, unusually for an F-150, requires premium gasoline; every other F-150 engine runs on regular. The Ford model-lineup page lists eight ordering trims (XL through Raptor) and does not include Raptor R separately — it is built as the top equipment group layered onto a Raptor. That said, it carries its own EPA certification and its own identity in the market, which is why it gets its own page here rather than getting folded silently into the base Raptor specs.

What buyers give up for the capability

Both trims trade fuel economy hard for performance — Raptor at 16 mpg combined, Raptor R at 12. Both are also the only F-150 trims without a hybrid or 2.7L EcoBoost option; the whole lineup exists around two dedicated performance engines. For Central Florida buyers, that is worth weighing honestly: most local driving is flat, paved, and does not call for a locking front differential or 37-inch tires. Raptor and Raptor R make the most sense for buyers who genuinely use the off-road capability — weekend trips to sand trails and off-road parks — or simply want the performance and presence, which is a legitimate reason on its own.
