The trim ladder is wide on purpose. A landscaping crew buying an XL Regular Cab wants none of what a family cross-shopping a Platinum SuperCrew wants, and Ford does not pretend otherwise — the safety architecture and drivetrain fundamentals are consistent across the range, but the equipment gap between the cheapest and most expensive F-150 is close to $75,000.

Six engines, one honest tradeoff

Every 2026 F-150 engine trades something for something else. The base 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (325 hp, 400 lb-ft) is the mileage leader among the gas engines at 21 mpg combined and tows up to 8,400 lbs — plenty for a single-axle trailer or a mid-size boat. Step to the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (400 hp, 500 lb-ft) and towing jumps to a best-in-class 13,500 lbs, though combined mileage drops slightly to 20. The 5.0L V8 (400 hp, 410 lb-ft) is the traditionalist’s pick — it does not lead any spec sheet, but it is the engine most F-150 buyers in this market still ask for by name. The PowerBoost full hybrid V6 (430 hp, 578 lb-ft) is the outlier worth a serious look: 24 mpg combined in 2WD form — the best of any gas F-150 by a wide margin — with a standard 7.2kW Pro Power Onboard system that can run job-site tools or back up a portion of a home’s power during a Florida storm outage. At the top, the Raptor’s High Output 3.5L EcoBoost (450 hp) and the Raptor R’s supercharged 5.2L V8 (720 hp) trade fuel economy almost entirely for capability — the Raptor R is EPA-rated at 12 mpg combined and runs on premium fuel, the only F-150 that does.
